One day on the evening news you heard the presenter talking about the Internet threat called ‘botnets’.

1::Botnets are a form of malicious software.
3::Someone could take control of my computer and use it for illegal activities, whilst I am not aware that my system has been compromised.
2::I might not be able to use an on-line service if it is affected by a botnet.

The answer is not correct. Botnets are networks of infected computers that can be used for illegal (e.g. cyber-criminal) activities without their owner’s knowledge. Malware is used to control the computer, and botnets are the network of infected computers. Even though botnets can affect companies they also have implications for ordinary users. Therefore, the correct is that criminals can attempt to take control of your devices (computer, mobile) and use them for illegal activities, whilst you are not aware that your system has been compromised (i.e. that it is part of a botnet).

This is partially correct. Botnets are networks of infected computers that can be used for illegal (e.g. cyber-criminal) activities without their owner’s knowledge. They could be used for preventing access to services; however, the purpose of creating a botnet is usually much worse than this. Even though botnets can affect companies, they also have implications for ordinary users. Therefore, the correct is that criminals can attempt to take control of your devices (computer, mobile) and use them for illegal activities, whilst you are not aware that your system has been compromised (i.e. that it is part of a botnet).

Despite this name looking like something coming from a science fiction book, this is a serious problem for many users.

How can botnets affect you?
