Hackers attack those who are unprepared. This means, especially for export-dependent global companies, that the weak link in the security system is often not found in their own robust networks, but among the smaller suppliers with whom they do business - or even with a supplier to a supplier. There are many examples; The attack that hit Swedish grocery chain Coop this summer was not aimed at Coop but at an American IT company that provides IT services to Coop. What affected Coop can affect all companies in the EU, not least those that have come a long way in their digitalisation. EU today has many advanced and technologically prominent companies that develop technology on their own and lead the next generation of digital systems and components. However, these companies also depend on a large number of suppliers and smaller companies to be able to generate innovation and maintain a high rate of development. The collaboration with others places great demands on security and that all parties have a sufficiently high level of protection - not least digitally. One of the challenges around digitization is that security is still neglected when designing products. The need to protect connected systems is not taken seriously enough. A review of Association of Swedish Engineering Industries (Teknikföretagen)'s members shows that less than 25 percent make demands on their suppliers in terms of cyber security. At the same time, an overwhelming majority have identified digital intrusion attempts in the past year. The vulnerabilities create leaks of trade secrets and generate billions in cost. What can we learn from the attack on Coop and how can we better protect ourselves?

In today's society it's nearly impossible to use products, websites, apps, household appliances, etc. without giving up some of your privacy. Likewise, as employees in research and education it's nearly impossible to carry out your work without taking the GDPR, Data Protection Impact Assessments, data processing agreements, consent forms, etc. into account. In fact, it becomes harder and harder, if not impossible, to be a 'good citizen / employee' without also becoming a privacy expert. But what is privacy exactly? And why is there so much emphasis on this nowadays? In this webinar, Arnout Terpstra (SURF & Tilburg University) will talk about the importance of privacy, why it still is so hard to come up with a proper definition, and what in his view can be done to prevent the further erosion of online privacy. Speaker: Arnout Terpstra - SURF & Tilburg University
